Well, howdy. Back from the event. Lots of fun. Short bullet point stuff:
1. EVE Valkyrie with Castle Rift is incredibly impressive. It is shocking the level of depth you can get from two screens like 1 inch away from your eyes. Still strange to think that the only company making a hard push into a VR game is a small Icelandic company...
2. Gunjack is cute. First person Space Invaders on-rail type of thing. Nice to know that Shanghai could take time out of their clearly packed schedule to make such a thing. *slight fume*
3. Pub Crawl is always fun.
4. There is a fancy nightclub that CCP rents out for a couple hours; 30 dollar drinks kind of fancy. Last year, we apparently offended some of the paying customers because a bunch of EVE nerds dressed in shorts and tee shirts doesn't mesh with the kind of crowd the nightclub usually pulls. That and CCP guys dressed as Elvis (Icelandic accent plus "thank ye verrry muuch" is like hearing Batman with a Jamaican accent)
Lots of fun and alcohol. The presentations are always great to listen to. As much as I dislike playing EVE, I love everything else about it. Long story short: "EVE is such a great thing; if only it were fun."
Ran into CCP Nullarbor talking to some EVE players. "Any news on the DUST port?" "Nothing to say." I did the usual rude fat guy thing and barged into the conversation: "As a DUST only player, the fact you have nothing to say on a port really pisses me off."
"Well, there is nothing I *can* say."
Got to meet Logibro. Got him laughing his ass off by walking up to him with a certain picture on my phone; those glaring eyes. "Where is the DUST port?"
"I have nothing to add." As an aside, those eyes are like the textbook definition of "son, I'm not mad... I'm just disappointed." May he forever use it for good because, damn...
CCP Arcade is the real winner that I got to talk to. Super nice guy. Talked to him about DUST, the desire for DUST to actually be something bigger than it is, and especially the general question of "are you guys aware?"
"We are listening. We do know." Talked about how Archduke got a support ticket that was a PS3 covered in dust with someone having written 'port dust.' I kept hammering in the whole "we understand if it is a tough road to not pull another Rouge Wedding" (he actually knew the reference) "but this total silence is killing us."
He seemed really understanding and I could tell he wanted to try to give some kind of relief. Whether Frame follows up on a supposed e-mail is another though. http://i.imgur.com/NMlDr3d.jpg
Valkyrie round table, some questions and answers:
Q. Corps, Alliances? A. "We are aware of the social needs of games. But Valkyrie is not as suitable for EVE style corps." Basically: "there will be something but don't expect something like EVE."
Q. Joy stick support? A. "we don't officially support joystick but we have them in the office." He went on to explain that if the arch in game is not identical to where you're holding your hands it can cause discomfort. IE, adding joysticks would mean your pilots hands would go from your lap to on a table. Adding joysticks would mean adding the art to match to mimic reality. Having played Elite: Dangerous, they are not wrong that you can feel sick when 'your hands' are not in the right spot compare to your real hands.
Q. Monetization model? A. "Not ready to talk."
Q. How will progression work? Part of the problem with DUST is "I have three times your HP and double your damage"; how will that work in an entirely player skill based game. A. "Progression will be choice based. Making missiles better weakens your turrets and vice versa. There won't be anything like '+5% Shields.'."
Q. Twitch support? A. Basically: "we want Valkyrie to have e-sport support, which means Twitch."
Q. Will the economy be based on 'buy, die, buy again'? A. "Not ready to talk about that."
Now the other question-answer that every player wants to know; my question from the Lore Round Table: Q. "After the party last night and especially after the Pub Crawl, I woke up in a strange room with '514' written on the walls in blood. Would you please tell us what the hell 514 means?"
From the lips of CCP Falcon, the guy that wrote it:
"Nope!"
"You are a rat bastard..."
"I know; it is one of my better qualities."
I did get a hint from him though after the RT: "Look into the heritage of the Caldari."
5 Winds? 1 Maker? No idea.
Still, worth the drive and price of admission. Might one day make it to FF but a 5 hour drive is a lot easier to stomach than a 9 hour flight and a lot cheaper. Perhaps...

/facepalm Jesus, dude. I know you guys are frustrated but at least have some decency when approaching the devs, especially the more influential ones that can actually make things happen. And coming from me, that should be a sign, yo. Wasn't as bad as I make it sound. There was a group of people congregating around the different devs, Nullarbor being one of them talking to like 3 other guys. I was listening to Nullarbor answer some questions about EVE and the like. I was standing in the group already. Wasn't like Nullarbor was on stage and I kicked the mic out of someone's hand and pulled a Kanye. The question came up and I responded to the answer. The "you" was in regards to all of CCP.
Mildly rude? Probablybut not as over the top as it seems in the quick way to relay the story.

GM Archduke wrote:I was curious what a DUST 514 player had to say about EVE Vegas, and I was halfway expecting this to be just another rage/rant/hate-post. Have to say I was pleasantly surprised! I'm glad you had fun, and that you got to meet Logibro and Arcade. Arcade really is the coolest guy, taught me mostly everything I know of EVE Online, and is just overall a great person to have at the office. Logibro is not too horrible either, but, you know. Ginger. Glad you liked Valkyrie and Gunjack too! And yes, we are listening, and we are aware. Yep, three years running. I actually have something I do with Guard every year; I pick him up in a bear hug and shake him a bit. He is a hell of a PR guy being open to the most ridiculous things.
I really cannot state how much I love everything about EVE... other than playing it. The story, atmosphere, lore, is all bloody brilliant. I just don't find the game interesting. Going to EVE Vegas always rekindles everything I love about the game without having to play it. (Just not my cup of tea is all; no hate meant.)
Gunjack can really be described as "cute." It is a cool side project as a little mobile game. For that, it works well. Simple, fun, again, cute. Kind of cool how just a phone can give that level of depth. Certainly nothing like Valkyrie but it was never meant to be. Y'all have done a really good job selling the game as a cool side thing rather than "EVE on my phone?!"
Valkyrie is impressive. Aside from just the OR being a hell of a piece of tech, it really is fun to play. The level of emersion is frightening. After like the 5 minute demo, you always get a jump scare with the fact that there was a table 2 foot from you. The leaps that have been made from DK1 to DK2 to Castle Rift, along with the actual game is staggering. The big winner is the fact that the VR aspect is NOT a gimmick. It is tied to being able to better chase down your opponent as well as the fact that it is how missiles are used; you click the fire button and where your eyes are is where the targetting reticule is. Seems small but that little feature makes the OR part of the gameplay rather than just making it more pretty. Basically no other game has that from what I have seen.
Arcade is a cool dude. I do have to kind of apologize to him because my father, who wasn't intoxicated, kept calling him 'Avocado.' Nice to get the word from the horses mouth of "we have nothing to say but we understand." Was in his Pub Crawl group; kept giving me spare drink tokens. Started as a great joke: "oh, you play DUST? Here, have an extra drink. You know wha-, take two..." Always fun to see the people behind the game are not humorless sticks.
Ohh, and when I get home I will post a cell phone video of Guard singing "Killing is just a means of communication."

CCP Frame wrote:Thank you for a great recap!
Just a small correction though regarding Valkyrie - definitely will support a selection of the most popular joysticks when EVE: Valkyrie launches. We can't commit to which ones yet, though.
Unfortunately there was a bit of a miscommunication at EVE Vegas, so apologies for that. So, how does CCP handle that kind of 'miscommunication'?
Minmatar: http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/chronicles/methods-of-torture-the-minmatar/ Caldari: http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/chronicles/methods-of-torture-the-caldari/ Amarr: http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/chronicles/methods-of-torture-the-amarr/ Gallente: http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/chronicles/methods-of-torture-the-gallente/
Actually, worse would be making them work on DUST! I, of course, jest. ^_^
The New Castle guys mentioned that adding support would mean supporting the art. Maybe that was why he hedged? No matter; it is the nature of the RT's for minor things to slide by.
Well, this post is officially a 'Murican post! We got the Red, White, and Blue posts.

Lac Nokomis wrote:So wait whats up with that CCPFrame email thing part?! Shady business practices that I cannot go into because I am under NDA.
I'm totally joking of course. Arcade promised to send out an email to Frame and Rattati list of concerns that the community has. Things like "where is the port?", " saying something is better than saying nothing", " it is scary to think that you guys are remaining silent while still selling skins", Basic things that any DUST player is naturally concerned about. I actually got an email from Arcade confirming that he sent out the email and both Frame and Rattati are actually aware of our concerns, even if they cannot/will not make any statements on the possibility of a port. Arcade is a cool dude with some bad ass facial hair. He went above and beyond the call of duty.
I want to stress something again. The first sentence is entirely a joke. I was vague in the original post because I didn't want to put anyone on the spot.
So while #PortDUST514 IS falling upon mute lips, it isn't falling upon deaf ears. To me, that's an important distinction.
